The oven is a box that we spraypainted white and cut out a door. We then cut out a window and put a piece of plastic wrap behind it. We drew knobs on the top of the box and put black bias tape "suspenders" on with hot glue. She found a picture of bread and we ironed it on to a white t-shirt...and done!! I think it's totally cute!

Buns in Ovens
I am planning on "celebrating" Halloween by cleaning my house and hopefully sewing, but my friend Jessica had a CRAFTING EMERGENCY, so I went over to her house this morning to help her make her costume. Jessica is 4 months pregnant, and wanted to go as an oven with a bun in it. So.....

Rusty Plum Buckle Purse
This was a commission from my best friend K. She has amazing taste, so it made me a little nervous to get carte blanche to do what I wanted. I have posted about this purse before, so I am not going to go into too much detail, but here are the basics:
plum and rust colored linen
interfaced with fusible fleece
lined with retro styled flames in quilter's cotton
4 pockets (cell phone, ipod, camera, and etc pocket)
brass colored accents

Happier Times
My house is clean
It's sunny outside
Everything is graded
Spring Break is in 5 days
And.....I sewed this weekend. So all is right with the world.
There are four pregnant women at my school this year, due about a month apart from each other, in April, May, June and July. One of them is having a baby shower on Tuesday, so I made these for her. She is the only one having a girl. This one is my favorite...
I ironed the leaves onto the shirt and ironed the flowers together to make them double-sided. I then straight-stitched around the leaves and zigzagged the edges of the flowers using contrasting thread. 3.16.2009
Someday I Might Get This Right
I made a few other things this weekend, including this purse:
This is actually a design I am working on for one of my best friends, who custom ordered a purse from me with some very specific pocket requests.
Things I like:
the color
the lining
the wrap around design
the length of the strap
Things I don't like:
it is too wide and the handle pulls the ends up oddly
I think I miscalculated the pocket sizes
the buckle is giving me issues - it needs to be the other direction, for one thing
I puckered the top of the flap where the wrap design crosses over
one side of the flap flips upwards
it's not stiff enough

Did NOT
I absolutely did NOT make one purse three times over the last three days. No, I most certainly did not sew the thing together upside down and then get all frustrated at why it wasn't working. Uh-uh, not I. And I did not wake up from a dream last night suddenly clear as a bell as to why it was not working (the upside down thing). And I most DEFINITELY did not sew it together completely and correctly - forgetting only the handles.
Definitely not. Pictures later.

Separation Anxiety
I am at my parents house for a few days, separated from my fabric and my sewing machine.....but am planning some things for when I get back. I did design a purse during church this morning. =)
See you in a few days.....

Purse
My best friend K hired me to make a purse for her mom. Her mom is a elementary school PE teacher who is about 6' tall. She is pretty no-nonsense, but has a hidden feminine layer (she collects Precious Moments figurines!). She needed a purse that could be worn over the shoulder, messenger style, was washable and durable, but didn't have bright colors. She also needed inner pockets, including one for her cell phone that was able to close. So I made this purse for her:
The front is above, and this is also a good picture of the color. I love this color, it is a really dark indigo, very narrow wale corduroy. The lining is pictured below. I don't know who designed this fabric, but I have loved it since the first time I saw it at JoAnns. I want something made out of it! Isn't it great? I figured it is slightly feminine, like my client, but not crazy girly. I love the pop of red in it. This picture below has two pockets, one open and one with a velcro flap for her phone. 2.01.2009
Super Sunday
OK, I know this is a gimme title, but it was a super sunday for more reasons than football. And, just for the record, I do like football. And I liked the Doritos commercials the best. But while watching football (and after grocery shopping) I finished up some things I had on the long list of unfinished projects.
The purse is lined with silver satin and the interfacing is heavy duty sew-in. I had some issues trying to figure out how to work the handle but I used D-rings and made it work. I kind of like it, even though it screams WEDDING in giant flashing neon letters.
I also sent her this apron, which my friend A is kindly modeling for me again. So much better than the original pictures of the apron draped unartistically around a post. It is not an original pattern, I used See and
Sew B5125. Also I gave her some button magnets, a business card holder and a small Starbucks insulated coffee cup.
Also, due to the idiocy of people who talk and drive, especially those without insurance, her beloved Mini Cooper must be retired. So in commemoration of her first and most important love, I made her this little pouch. I think it's fun.....

AND, I finished my friend Stacie's birthday present, which was too small. I made her slipcovers for her camera strap as she is a professional photographer. I showed you one already, but these are all four. In addition, since her hands are always cold, I sewed some little rice packets into her gloves using this tutorial, which will allow her to put her gloves in the microwave for a few seconds and have toasty warm hands. No pictures of that, you'll just have to trust me. =)
First of all, I finished up a small clutch that I made for an exchange. The girl is getting married soon and may have to forego the ceremony due to financial issues, so I felt like she needed something REALLY weddingey. In a box from a freecycler, I had gotten a piece of satin that was clearly from a wedding dress (there were also some hideous bows circa 1990, but I went ahead and put them out of their misery) so I used Lisa Lam's Rather Cheeky Clutch pattern and put a handle on that is about an inch wide.
AND I finished a birthday present for a friend. I am probably giving too much away, but since it was already her birthday last Friday she can see what it is.....First of all this purse, which is my own design. I posted about it earlier, but needed a handle to make it work better, so I added that this weekend.
Hope your superbowl sunday was fabulous.....

Good News!
The CPSIA law has been delayed for a year!! This is a Godsend to small crafters and the thousands of artists that make items for children. Go here for details.....

Number 100
Just realized this is post number 100 for me. Hm. No fanfare. Ah, well.
Finished this purse and camera strap today and cut some other things out. The purse is red, which is really hard to photograph. It is not suede and not moleskin, but is something like that and I love the lining fabric. This is for a friend's birthday...
The above picture is pretty close to the red color, but the picture below shows the shape best.

The Hot Granny Purse
I have had this purse half finished since Christmas break, but just finally got the right color of lining last weekend. It is still not quite right, it is hard to sew things sometimes using this kind of lining because it is a bit thick. I also thought it turned out kind of long, so I went back when I was done and cut the actual pattern down by two inches so that the next one I make will not be quite as long.
I do like the shape of the flap on the front and I LOVE the fabric. I think the fabric looks like something from your grandma's house, hence the name "hot granny."
This one started out as a round clutch, but I had so much trouble sewing it that I changed it into a flat clutch. The fabric is a textured deep-pile velvet that I had trouble finding a lining for. It is cream colored but has a brown undertone so nothing went with it. I finally got some deep pumpkin colored satin, but I think when I use it again I will use chocolate brown, something completely rich. I had only one button like this that I had been saving for a while, so I used that.

I need to work on putting the magnets not so close to the edge, I had some trouble with it pulling the flap all wonky.

I also made some business card holders. Not totally happy with these either, but will work more on them. I did teach myself to install snaps. Very cool.
All of these items will most likely remain with me, since none of them are exactly what I saw in my head and none of them are good enough to sell, but I think that all three patterns have potential.

Reasons
I am been such a slogger (slacker blogger) this week, sorry! I have some excuses...none of them great, but it is the first week back to school after an extended Christmas break and it is always a hard transition for me to get back into the swing of things. Over breaks, I tend to stay up really late and get up really late, and getting up at 5:15 for school is rough.
In addition, I tend to hit my sewing high point about 10 pm, and during school, I have to go to bed then. BLEAH.
In my last post, I asked a question - is it ok to use a pattern to sew an item and then sell it? The reason that had been in my head was that over Thanksgiving, when my mom was here, we stopped in a high-end boutique downtown since I wanted to see how the commission thing went. In the front of the store were these very simple little clutches that were made from upholstery remnants and "vintage" buttons and were priced at $45.
I felt like I had seen the pattern before, but couldn't remember where, and then a few weeks later, I saw an actual copy of Amy Karol's Bend the Rules Sewing and realized that the clutch on the cover is THE EXACT SAME.

So that is where the question came from. Ethically, before that point, I would have said that no, it is not ok to sell something made from someone else's pattern, especially in large quantities(There were probably 50 little clutches in the store). But that started me thinking and that's why I asked the question.
Commenters seem to be evenly split between two camps, those who make things and those who do not. So my next question is this: Is it ok to make something on commission for someone who wants a specific pattern? For example, if I win an etsy alchemy bid from someone who wants a diaper bag, and wants me to use Amy Butler fabric with an Indygo Junction pattern, is that ok to sell?

Some weeks are drippier than others
Sorry for the lack of posts...here's one reason why.
AND I broke my last sewing needle and am on an even more restrictive budget this month due to my incapabilities in math so I haven't actually made anything in almost a week. I did find one more needle, which has to last the rest of the month, so I shall be a very careful sewer.
AND...I have been having an interesting discussion with Antoinette (Clevergirl) about copyright when it comes to patterns....as in, is it okay to make something from a pattern that I have bought (for example, from Simplicity or something) and then sell that item?
Thoughts?

Whew!! Hope everyone is fully recovered from New Year's Eve and is ready for the weekend! Weekends are for parties and going out, so to get you going out in style, here is a clutch made of gold shantung with copper colored swivel hooks. It can be a clutch, a handled purse, or a wristlet, depending on what you do with the handle. It is lined with cream cotton and is my own design. To win, leave me a comment!!
This will be my last giveaway of the week. It has been fun, but wow, this is a lot of work! Of course, this is just in time for almost my one hundredth post (this is number 94). Hm....we'll see what happens. It has been fun though, I have jumped from 6 to 19 followers, which is cool, and it has been a lot of fun giving things away! The few blogs I have had a chance to stop by I have really enjoyed looking at. I have discovered that it is hard to write tutorials though, which gives me even MORE respect than I had for those who regularly publish theirs! If I can get things together, I may post a tutorial tomorrow. Thanks again for all your kind comments this week, I will be sure to come by your blogs as soon as I can!
Incidentally, this is the fifth time I have written this post, my computer keeps freezing...ARGH!

Quickie but goodie...
This popped into my head last night so I whipped up a template last night and put this together today. I kind of love it, but it needs a handle. I want to get gold colored hardware first.....It's not a great picture, but it is a pretty great purse. =) Merry Christmas everyone!! See you on Sunday for the giveaways!!!

Sometimes I Feel Like a Talentless Hack
I love making bags. I have bags that swim around in my head. I think of things and see parts of bags and pieces of bags and wristlets and coin purses wherever I go. I see people on the street and while I do the superficial check of their clothing, I almost immediately go to their bag. I love bags. And yet I feel like I have no original thoughts about bags. I see other people's designs and think, "oh, I could make that," which is ANATHEMA to any designer and yet I can't seem to come up with any original designs of my own. Maybe someday, but apparently not anytime in this decade. Or probably the next. That's probably why I don't sell anything on etsy.
Thanks for letting me be such a big baby....

Tied and Muffled
I have been thinking about ties though lately, and the other night got the idea to make one into a scarf. I didn't know exactly how I wanted to do this, but did decide to make the back out of silk or something soft like that. I didn't take a picture of the before tie, but it was an awesome, very retro '70s tie that was chocolate brown with daisies and butterflies on it. Very manly, I know. I ended up with this....
which is not a great picture, but is the closest you will get to seeing me on this blog. Here is the scarf (scarflette??) untied and hung up with the remainder of the gold silk as a background:
I started by splitting the tie up the back and taking the stiffener out of it, then ironing it flat. That was the point that I realized that a tie is VERY wide at the bottom. There's a lot of fabric in those things! I debated cutting it down, but decided not to this time since I liked the lining and didn't want to resew the ends. I may do this on a different scarf. I then pinned the flat tie onto some gold silk that I found in a drawer and cut out another tie shape of gold silk and one of polyester batting. Then I layered them together, sewed the two long sides and turned it inside out. Some handstitching on the ends and I was done! I used some of the buttons my mom brought me over Thanksgiving and put a buttonhole on the other end and tried it on. Nice and warm, but very smooth against my skin. I am not a huge fan of fleece scarves and I really like the way this one feels. Any thoughts? I have a few more ties and I am thinking of making some for the shop but would love to know what you think first.

Weekend Update
It is COLD COLD COLD.....I am hoping for a Snow Day tomorrow...fingers crossed. Instead of grading, I finished this:
You can kind of see in the top center square that there are several things in one square. That started out as a child's hat, which I split and flattened, also a piece of a tracksuit (DO NOT IRON...) =) and they are sewed onto a pair of basketball shorts.

FINALLY some crafty action!
OK...MANY things are following:
1. I won this bag a while back...it came...it's bigger than I expected but I love it.
2. I finally finished the purse I was wanting to make for one of my friends. I have been working a lot with moleskin lately and really like it, except that it walks a little when I sew it. I also really like this particular color. I got it as a remnant a while back and it was something like 75% off because one part looks like someone rubbed axle grease on it. I didn't use that part...on this project. =)
3. I was trying to think of something to make for people at school for Christmas, and since I don't cook, that lets out the usual plate of cookies, and I thought of these...they are magnets. Since we use whiteboards, which are magnetic, I thought they would work pretty well. I am thinking about putting them in the shop if I can figure out how to make the back neater. They are done on upcycled kids project foamboard (I save all old poster projects for making patterns or whatever I need) and I kind of like them. I will probably be making this a tutorial for my birthday week (end of December).
5. She also brought me a box of patterns, and a box of fabric, part decorator weight and part quilter's cotton. I have visions of purse things dancing in my head.
6. I'm gong to the Urban Craft Uprising tomorrow...I'm so excited!!!!!
